GREENSBURG COMMUNITY SCHOOL CORPORATION BROAD-BASED COORDINATED SCHOOL HEALTH ADVISORY COUNCIL (CSHAC= )

Greensburg Community Sc= hool Corporation has formed a board-based Coordinated School Health Advisory Council to provide input in regard to wellness programs that are in place= in our schools. The committee meets two times a year, once in the fall and o= nce in the spring. Being a broad-based committee, its membership is made up of school personnel, students, community members, and parents.

Co-Chairs are Edward Da= ihl, Greensburg Elementary Assistant Principal and Mindy Grunkemeyer, School Nurse.

Notes from January 15, 20= 09 meeting:

The committee conducted its fall 2009 meeting on Janua= ry 15, 2009 at Greensburg Elementary. Various members of the group spoke about what was going on to promote healthy lifestyles for students and staff. Mrs. Owe= ns, food service director shared more fresh fruit was being served, better sala= ds available, and healthier menus were being planned. She also reported that no fried foods are being served in Greensburg Schools. = Greensburg Jr. High= School staff reported that an aerobics program was being considered, fitness tests were going to be done, and new fitness machines would be available in the n= ew activities area. Greensbu= rg High School reporte= d that advanced p. e. classes are optional. Aquatic classes are being offered. The hallways are being used by the community for walking and the field house is open on the weekend for use by the public. Greensburg Elementary reported t= he walking program for elementary staff. Several staff members wear pedometers= to keep track of their weekly steps. Those steps are tallied each Monday and recorded. This program will continue until spring.

Some suggestions were given by various members of the committee. Alexis Laska, Decatur County Hospital dietician = suggested the hospital would be interested in helping to teach health and nutrition at the elementary. Dennis Spears, Greensburg Jr. High suggested maybe introduc= ing different fresh fruits on Fridays in Health class for students to try. It w= as suggested more nutrition information be given to seniors before they gradua= te from high school.

Diane Moore suggested that we should advertise that th= e high school is open for the community to walk during after school hours. It also= was suggested a link be put on the Greensburg Community School website to advertise information about the CSHAC committee activities.

Mr. Daihl reported the subcommittee met to discuss the= GCS Drug Prevention policy. The committee believes the current policy meets the need= s of the students and staff. Mr. Chapple indicated that a discussion by the subc= ommittee reviewing the Control of Noncasual-Contact Communicable Diseases feels the corporation policy meets the requirements of the law.

Mr. Daihl asked that each school committee begin devel= oping a plan for healthy activities for the 2009-2010 school = year. A health fair for staff or a walking program would be examples of possible healthy activities to consider. Mr. Daihl asked that the schools be ready to report their possible activities at the May CSHAC committee meeting. Mr. Da= ihl indicated that the May meeting would be announced later in the spring.

Review of existing Wellness Policy:

Food Service- recent changes include salad (with spina= ch in it) offered every day, increased fiber, fruit and fruit juice offered every day, French fries offered only 2 days/week with decreased portions, and bre= ad offered with just jelly, no butter.

Menus are made by food service employees and discussed= with building administration (at the elementary school) The state school lunch program rev= iews GCS program yearly and suggests any needed changes which are then followed.= There is no dietician evaluation or input into the current menu planning process.

No kid will go hungry within the GCS.

Goals for Food Service from this meeting: 1. Work in collaboration with Decatu= r County Hospital dietician on menu planning ideas, keeping in mind price, foods that kids wi= ll eat, and nutrition guidelines. 2. Look into FACS classes developing sample menus based on their education abo= ut nutrition guidelines and cost. 3. Encourage stu= dents to eat breakfast through educating families and students on the importance = of breakfast for student performance.

School Personnel-The Elementary School offered employe= es a walking program which was widely participated in and a mini health fair. The Junior High is adding a fitnes= s area to the school and a 7^th grade free after school program is being planned in coordination with the Greensburg YMCA. The high school is open to the com= munity for hallway walking before school. The HS field house is open to off season athletes after school. The number of students participati= ng in advanced PE has grown from one class to 5 classes at the High School. All sports teams have had increased enrollment. Six teams have summer camps.&n= bsp; A walking trail is being collaborated on by the GCS and Parks Dept on school grounds. Health classes being taught at the JH and HS teach state standards. At the Elementary School, health is incorporated into the science curriculum.

Goals for School Personnel: 1. Offer mini health fair focusing= on staff health at the Junior High and High School as well as Elementary School next school year.

Drug Free Schools Committee will now be incorporated i= nto the CSHC.

Summarization of Drug Free School actions: Prevention starts as education in the Elementary School and increases in frequency and content through the health classes as the students’ age. Drug testing is mandatory at the H= igh School for drivers and random for all throughout the year. Kids with tobacco products on scho= ol are ticketed, which

costs them $117.50 each incident. No alcohol, tobacco products or drugs are allowed on any school property. The SADD and Teen Facilitators pro= grams are very active in the HS. Th= e GCS Board is very committed to keep kids from getting involved with drugs, alco= hol, and tobacco.

AIDS Advisory Council- not currently meeting. education through the health classes on self protectio= n from AIDS and sexually transmitted illnesses.

Next meeting of the CSHC will be in late Oct/early Nov ’08. The date will be s= hared with the administration office so a notice can be advertised to the public.=

The following subcommittees will meet and assess curre= nt programs and make recommendations for the school system based on the state mandates for the committees.

Drug Free School Subcommittee- cha= ir Ed Daihl, members: Phil Chapp= le, Diane Moore, Stephen Taylor, Jane Smith.

Fall 2008 – Coordinated Health Advisory Council meeting is Thursday, November 13^th at 9:00 am – Greensburg Elementary School.

The subcommittees will present a one page draft of GCS’s policy proposal for their respective focus.
