) Greensburg Community Sc= hool Corporation has formed a board-based Coordinated School Health Advisory Council to provide input in regard to wellness programs that are in place= in our schools. The committee meets two times a year, once in the fall and o= nce in the spring. Being a broad-based committee, its membership is made up of school personnel, students, community members, and parents. Advisory Council April 20, 2011 In Attendance: Mr. Hunter &nbs= p; Mr. Chapple Mr. Strouse Mr. Daihl Stephen Taylor Diane Moore Mary Ann Owens Lisa Menkedick Stacey Reisman Natalie Rivera (JH student) Marty Brewsaugh (HS stud= ent) Kierra Cooney (GES stude= nt) Sue Collee Alexis Laska Stacy Meyer Amy Maple Jenny Schoettmer Sheri Campbell Mindy Grunkemeyer Amy Wickens Report from Mary Ann Owens: ****new for the 2011/2012 school year – offeri= ng healthier choices Whole grain white bread and wheat bread being served instead of traditional white bread 1 cup of vegetables, fruit and juice will be offered= each day Low fat margarine will be used High school is the only school serving fried food: Staff: Zumba classes offered in= the fall for all GCS staff members Pedometers Weight Watchers meetings Monthly birthday pitch in has been eliminated Students: Morning stretches PE classes twice a week 15 minute recess per day Emotional group activities – led by Mrs. Janso= n Afternoon ROCKS program offered by YMCA Girls on the Run program sponsored by This program, open to all girls in grades 3, 4 & 5 provides lessons on self confidence and bullying among many other topics. Each girl receives a pair of run= ning shoes. Students receive a message relating to one of nine character words during the morning announcements each day from either the principal or assistant principal. Family Fun Nights are held twice a year for each gra= de level. GES has 80-85% parent/student participation. Jr. Optimist Club members from the high school assist with these events. Greensburg Jr. High……. Focusing on physical, mental and emotional wellness<= /p> Guest speakers every Tuesday and Thursday during hea= lth class Archery program offered next year in PE classes Students have access to a weight room during PE clas= s Jr. High students have many clubs/activities availab= le to them, giving them the opportunity to form bonds with other students in the group. The number of students participating in PE classes is increasing. The High School offers aquatics = and life guarding classes for students. Vending machines are on timers….students canno= t use these during lunches. An ID system is being used as students go through the lunch lines. Therefore more students are taking advantage of the free and reduced lunch program. Students felt like they were bei= ng singled out before this process was implemented. Bullying and harassment programs are offered to stud= ents as well as suicide prevention. A mentoring program is in place pairing High School students with 8th grade students as they prepare for the transition from Jr. High to the High School. Mr. Strouse noted that positive = changes have been seen in these students with regard to grades and behavior. These students go on a retreat o= ne time during their 8th grade year, which includes a tour of the high school. The students participate in various activities throughout the year with their mentors.= Parenting Meetings =

offered at the elementary and Jr. High schools. These informational meetings pro=
vided
tips on parenting and dealing with different situations both at home and
school. All 3 schools participate in the following pro=
grams: Big Brothers Big Sisters – Lunchtime AIM progr= am Internet safety Notes from school nurse: 3 new shots will be implemented for the 2011/2012 sc= hool year: 2nd chicke= n pox, meningitis and TDAP. 80-85%= of our students are in compliance. Puberty talks will be given to all 5th gr= ade students soon. Head lice policy has been revised because it is not = spread as easily as once thought. = Live lice is removed by the nurse and the student is= sent back to class. Students are= no longer sent home, reducing the number of days missed by students. The goal is to educate parents by working closely with the Decatur County Board of Health. Notes from Mr. Hunter: Corporation facilities such as the pool, field house= and track at the high school are offered to the public. The high school is open in the evenings for anyone wishing to walk in the hallways. Greensburg Elementary is used for various events suc= h as Day of Dance, Women’s Symposium and Health Fair. A 2 mile walking path will be available next spring.= The 10’ paved path will go= from the public library to A-Z occasions.&nbs= p; Portions of this path will be on school property. The high school is used by the Greensburg Police Department as well as the Decatur County Sheriff’s Department for training purposes. All staff members at GCS are trained in CPR. An organized wellness program is in the works for GCS staff members. Greensburg Community Schools strives to keep students actively involved by offering non-traditional activities as well as the m= ore traditional sports. Mr. Hunter commented on the support given to the sch= ool corporation by the community. We are becoming a closer knit community within the s= chool corporation because of the obstacles we face each year as a group. Notes from parents/community members: GCS was commended on the various ways it reaches out= to the students. · Students are coming forward to seek help/guidance. · More self awareness on the student’s part · Students are stepping in to solve problems with other students It was agreed by all in attendance to continue to me= et once a year in the spring. Owens, food service director shared more fresh fruit was being served, be=

salads available, and healthier menus were being planned. She also report=

that no fried foods are being served in Greensburg Schools. Some suggestions were given by various members of the
committee. Alexis Laska, Diane Moore suggested that we should advertise that =
the
high school is open for the community to walk during after school hours. =
It
also was suggested a link be put on the Mr. Daihl reported the subcommittee met to discuss t= he GCS Drug Prevention policy. The committee believes the current policy meets t= he needs of the students and staff. Mr. Chapple indicated that a discussion = by the subcommittee reviewing the Control of Noncasual<= /span>-Contact Communicable Diseases feels the corporation policy meets the requirements= of the law. Mr. Daihl asked that each school committee begin developing a plan for healthy activities for the 2009-2010 school year. A health fair for staff or a walking program w= ould be examples of possible healthy activities to consider. Mr. Daihl asked t= hat the schools be ready to report their possible activities at the May CSHAC committee meeting. Mr. Daihl indicated that the May meeting would be announced later in the spring. (CSHC) 5/15/08 Review of existing Wellness Policy: Food Service- recent changes include salad (with spi= nach in it) offered every day, increased fiber, fruit and fruit juice offered every day, French fries offered only 2 days/week with decreased portions,= and bread offered with just jelly, no butter. Menus are made by food service employees and discuss= ed with building administration (at the elementary school) The state school lunch program r= eviews GCS program yearly and suggests any needed changes which are then followed. There is no dieti= cian evaluation or input into the current menu planning process. No kid will go hungry within the GCS. Goals for Food Service from this meeting: 1. Work in
collaboration with School Personnel-The Elementary School offered emplo= yees a walking program which was widely participated in and a mini health fair.<= span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'> The Junior High is adding a fitn= ess area to the school and a 7th grade free after school program is being planned in coordination with the Greensburg YMCA. The high school is open to the community for hallway walking before school. The HS field house is open to off season athletes after school. The number of students participating in advanced PE has grown from one class = to 5 classes at the High School. All sports teams have had increased enrollment. Six teams have summer camps.<= span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'> A walking trail is being collabo= rated on by the GCS and Parks Dept on school grounds. Health classes being taught at t= he JH and HS teach state standards. At the Elementary School, health is incorporated into the science curriculum= . Goals for School Personnel: 1. Offer mini health fair focusi= ng on staff health at the Junior High and High School as well as Elementary Sch= ool next school year. Drug Free Schools Committee will now be incorporated= into the CSHC. Summarization of costs them $117.50 each incident. No alcohol, tobac= co products or drugs are allowed on any school property. The SADD and Teen Facilitators programs are very active in the HS. The GCS Board is very committed to keep kids from getting involved with drugs, alcohol, and tobacco. Next meeting of the CSHC will be in late Oct/early N= ov ’08. The date will be shared with the administration office so a notice can be advertised to the public. The following subcommittees will meet and assess cur= rent programs and make recommendations for the school system based on the state mandates for the committees.
