"Each year the state department of education recognizes schools who perform in the top 25th percentile on ISTEP+ and End of Course Assessments. Greensburg Junior High School received it’s first “Four Star” rating based on the 2012-2013 ISTEP+ results. Congratulations to the entire school community for this tremendous distinction.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

GJHS Student to Participate in Survey

Students at Greensburg Jr. High School will be asked to participate in the Indiana Prevention Resource Center’s survey on alcohol, tobacco, and other drug (ATOD) use among Indiana’s children and adolescents.  The survey will be given on February 2nd and 3rd 2015.

Data from the ATOD survey helps meet requirements for the Drug Free Communities Grant awarded to Decatur County and administered by the Community Action Coalition. Dollars received from the Drug Free Grant are used to fund various programs to deter substance abuse among youth in Decatur County. Survey statistics help track the impact that programs are having on substance abuse in Greensburg and Decatur County. In addition, our results are compared with the results from other schools in Indiana and across the nation. The information alerts us to levels of use and trends in substance abuse. This allows our community to focus on specific areas of need.

The ATOD survey is entirely voluntary, and is administered under strict guidelines that make it completely confidential.  The 2015 survey will provided to our student on-line and uploaded directly to the Indiana Prevention Resource Center data processing center.  The students will take the survey during their Health/PE classes.

Any parent/guardian who does not want his/her student to participate should submit a written statement indicating that preference to Assistant Principal Deb Smith by Friday, January 30th  at 3:00pm.

Yearbook pictures will be taken on Friday, Feb. 6 starting at 8:00 a.m. Pictures for student council, office/library helpers, band, choir, etc. will be taken.

The prizes for the magazine and cookie dough sales has been postponed and will not be held this Friday. So, the date for the limo ride, lunch, obstacle course and cash draw will be announced later. Please listen for a  rescheduled date.

Yearbooks will go on sale for $17.00. Forms will be passed out in homeroom. Students should fill out their name and homeroom teacher. Order forms are due Feb. 3 to the office. Checks should be made payable to GJHS or you may go online to order one.  Extra order forms are available in the black tower by the office.

8th graders going to Washington DC this year are reminded that the second installment payments of $210.00 is due this week. Please make checks payable to GJHS.

There will be a call out meeting for anyone who wants to participate in Track and Field on Wednesday, Jan. 28 during homerooms. All 6th graders will report to the auditorium and any 7/8 grade students who want to do track this year.

County Music Festival will be February 17 with the concert in the evening in the High School Auditorium.

Greensburg Public Library will host a Battle of the Books on Saturday, April 18th.  Teams from GJHS will compete against teams from St. Mary’s, North Decatur, and South Decatur.  If enough readers participate, we may even compete amongst ourselves.  This would be the year for GJHS boys to avenge last year’s embarrassing defeat to GJHS girls!  If you love to read and like to hang out with other students who love to read, this is THE event for you.  Stop by the GJHS library for more information.

REMEMBER TO PERIODICALLY CHECK STANDS OUTSIDE THE MAIN OFFICE FOR NEW NEWS.  YMCA and others update their activities regularly.
