Student Responsibilities
- If a student misses a class, it is his/her responsibility to contact the teacher about make-up work the next day the class meets and he/she is present. Any assignments due the day of the absence must be submitted to the teacher on the day the student returns to class. If a student is absent from a class more than one day, he/she will be given an amount of time equal to the days absent from that class to make up his/her work.
- It is the responsibility of the student to make up any quiz or test that they miss due to an absence. Tests and quizzes will be completed in a timely manner that reflects the time frame indicated above and the judgment of the teacher. Failure to make up a test or quiz will result in a "0". Absences for such occasions as vacations, college visits, and field trips must be planned in advance. As part of that planning, it will be the student's responsibility to contact his/her teachers and make arrangements for make-up work BEFORE the absence.
- It is the responsibility of the student to bring all of their materials to class every time we meet. If students do not bring their materials to class it makes learning difficult. If a student must borrow a writing utensil then I will ask for collateral in exchange. For example, I will lend a pen/pencil to a student and they will trade something that is of value to them (something that they would want back). At the end of the class period an exchange will be made back.
- It is the responsibility of the student to be prepared for class by doing and turning in all assignments on time. Each day (NOT each class period) an assignment is late it is one letter grade off automatically, without even being graded. An assignment will not be accepted if it is more than five days late. It is essential for students to turn their assignments in on time. I don't usually offer extra credit in this class. However, students will be allotted two passes (restroom or locker) per nine weeks grading period and if they opt not to use them then they will be given five bonus points for each pass not used.
- It is the responsibility of the student to do all assignments even though some might not be graded in complete. For example, one day I might do a homework check to see if the assignment was even attempted; another day I would check and grade only certain problems from the homework or grade all questions.
- It is the responsibility of the student to do all assigned reading before coming to class. Pop-quizzes are fair game in this class, so come prepared. It is impossible to have class discussion or do any activity that involves assigned reading when only a handful of students read. These quizzes are not meant to give to students so they fail. If the student reads the material then a pop-quiz would not be difficult. This way a student can be rewarded for doing the assigned reading and succeeding on the quiz. Pop-quizzes may only be made up if the student has an excused absence.
Student Expectations
- I expect students to be attentive during class and participate in group discussions.
- I expect students to show respect not only to the teacher, but to any faculty/staff member that may enter the room, any substitute teacher that may be in the room, as well as their fellow classmates.
- I expect students to keep the room clean by not writing on the desks or any other furniture and by keeping the floors free of trash.
- I expect students to remain in their seats until dismissed.
Grading
Grades are determined by the total points earned, divided by the total points possible and then applied to the schools grading scale. Points come from quizzes, tests, in-class assignments, homework assignments, projects, presentations, etc.
