Course Overview & Curriculum

 

COURSE OBJECTIVES FOR ALL CHOIRS:

1.   to develop proper breathing and vocal production

2.   to develop the ability to identify and read note & rhythm values

3.   to develop the ability to sing multiple parts in harmony

4.   to develop the ability to sight read

5.   to develop the ability to follow the directions of a conductor

6.   to develop good stage presence

 

 

COURSE TITLE:  Beginning Chorus, Grades 9-12

 

COURSE DESCRIPTION:  Beginning Choir is a non-auditioned mixed choir of freshmen through seniors.  It will provide students with the basic music skills that they will need to continue with the music program, or to further their current music skills.  They will sing a variety of musical styles at a medium level of difficulty.  They will be required to perform at multiple concerts during the school year including ISSMA Organizational Contest.  Students will also have the opportunity to attend ISSMA Solo & Ensemble Contest.  Daily rehearsals will include physical and vocal warm-ups, sight singing, ear-training, music theory, and vocal technique.  Periodic vocal testing will take place over part-singing and sight-singing abilities, as well as written exams.    

 

 

 

COURSE TITLE:  Intermediate Chorus/Women’s Choir, Grades 9-12

 

COURSE DESCRIPTION:  Women’s Choir is an auditioned choir of women.  It will provide students the opportunity to develop their music skills for successful choral singing.  They will sing a variety of musical styles at a medium level of difficulty.  They will be required to perform at multiple concerts during the school year including ISSMA Organizational Contest.  Students will also have the opportunity to attend ISSMA Solo & Ensemble Contest.  Time may also be spent outside of the school day for dress rehearsals and performances.  Daily rehearsals will include physical and vocal warm-ups, sight singing, ear-training, music theory, and vocal technique.  Periodic vocal testing will take place over part-singing and sight-singing abilities, as well as written exams. 

  

 

 

COURSE TITLE:  Advanced Chorus: Show Choir, Grades 10-12

 

COURSE DESCRIPTION:  Show Choir is an auditioned choir of sophomores, juniors, and seniors that serve as ambassadors of the community and school.  “Elite Edition” will provide students the opportunity to develop their music skills for successful choral singing.  After an extensive vocal and dance audition, students will sing and dance to a variety of musical styles at an advanced level of difficulty.  They will be required to perform at multiple concerts during the school year including ISSMA Organizational Contest, community performances, and festivals.  Students will also have the opportunity to attend ISSMA Solo & Ensemble Contest.  Time will be spent outside of the school day for dress rehearsals and performances and are required.  Daily rehearsals will include physical and vocal warm-ups, sight singing, ear-training, music theory, and vocal technique.  Periodic vocal testing will take place over part-singing and sight-singing abilities, as well as written and dance exams. 

 

JR. HIGH CHOIRS:

DESCRIPTON:  6th, 7th, & 8th Grade Choirs are non-auditioned mixed choirs.  They will provide students with the basic music skills that they will need to start with the music program, or to further their current music skills.  They will sing a variety of musical styles at an easy to moderate level of difficulty.  They will be required to perform at multiple concerts during the school year including ISSMA Organizational Contest.  Students will also have the opportunity to attend ISSMA Solo & Ensemble Contest.  Daily rehearsals will include physical and vocal warm-ups, sight singing, ear-training, music theory, and vocal technique.  Periodic vocal testing will take place over part-singing and sight-singing abilities, as well as written exams.
