WELCOME TO MR.ZOLLMAN’S PHYSICAL EDUCATION CLASS
WHO- Three classes of 8th grade, one 7th grade, and two 6th grade boys.
WHEN- The entire first nine weeks of school.
WHAT TO BRING AND WEAR- Athletic shorts, T-shirts, socks and tennis shoes are a must. I would highly suggest that each student bring a different pair of shorts and shirt than the ones that they wear during the school day. This will alleviate the smell and uncomfortable feeling of wet clothes throughout the day. Other teachers and students will thank you! Stud earrings, bracelets and tight fitting necklaces will be allowed as long as they do not interfere with safety of the student or others. Students will be given a locker to use for everyday use. Mr. Zollman is not a locker and will not be responsible for any items brought to class by the student. Each student must bring a folder and something to write with everyday. This will be vital for record keeping and a large part of the grading process.
WHAT TO EXPECT IN CLASS- This year will begin a new program that has been well planned and is ready for students to attack it with energy and excitement. The focus of the year will be on overall fitness. Ten elements of fitness will be addressed on a weekly basis (cardiovascular/respiratory endurance, stamina, strength, flexibility, power, coordination, agility, balance, speed and accuracy.) The theory behind these elements is that fitness requires an ability to perform well at all tasks, even unfamiliar tasks, tasks combined in infinitely varying combinations. We are not going to be focusing on sport specific tasks as the main agenda for class. The mix up of reps, exercises, time differentials, and effort will keep the body guessing and be able to help the student be able to adapt to life situations.
WHAT WE ARE NOT DOING- We are not training athletes for specific sports. This class is going to be focused on every student, not just the athletically gifted. The great part of this program is that everything is scalable. This means that everyone can perform the workout at their own level.
HOW THE WEEK WILL BE SET UP- Monday and Wednesday will be fitness days. Tuesday will be a walk/run day. Thursday will be random sport day (flag football, soccer, ultimate Frisbee, etc.) Friday will be archery day. These days are subject to change depending on other school/weather related issues.
WHAT AND WHY ARCHERY- Our school has had the opportunity to acquire archery equipment for the student to learn and use. There will be more information coming out later detailing this program. I am very excited for this program to take off here at GJHS.
