Delay / Closing Guidelines
The process of determining delays or cancellations of school starts around 4:30 a.m on inclement weather days. This decision involves many GCS staff members and community agencies. We want to stress a delay or closure is not a unilateral decision made by only the Superintendent. Our goal is always to have school when students and staff can safely get to school. These decisions are always made with great care. There are many factors that go into the decision including:
- The county's emergency status, as set by Decatur County Emergency Management Agency. EMA may set the county's status as yellow, orange, or red. If there is a red status, this means unnecessary travel is not allowed. School will be closed.
- The status of roads in the county and city based on treatment and clearing by the Decatur County Highway Department and City of Greensburg. .
- Decisions on road status are made by a team of GCS officials, including Superintendent Tom Hunter, Director of Maintenance Tim Kane, Director of Transportation Travis Scudder, and School Resource Officer Brendan Bridges. Roads are driven between 4:30 a.m. and 5:45 a.m. to get the best possible information to make an informed decision.
- The best available weather forecast for conditions during student arrival and throughout the school day, including through student dismissal. In many cases, conditions as far as eight hours in the future must be considered in the decision to delay or close. Our ability to deliver students after school must also be considered.
- How much ice is on the roads? Ice is much harder to deal with than just snow.
- How many students, if any, cannot be reached by school bus due to impassible roads.
- Is drifting snow a concern? Student drivers are also factored in whether it is safe to have school.
- Collaboration with neighboring districts, including Decatur County Schools, Rushville, Shelbyville, Batesville, South Ripley and sometimes Columbus.
