Five seniors present Engineering projects

Five seniors present Engineering projects

(GREENSBURG, Ind.) – Five Greensburg students who each plan to study engineering in college presented their 2025 Senior Engineering Class project on Wednesday. Seniors Joey Everroad, Chase Tekulve, and Sam Tuchmann, Tristen Hostetler and Ashton Stromberg have conducted research and experiments the entire school year.

Everroad, Tekulve and Tuchmann focused on harvesting apples from apple trees. They had discovered that many apples are wasted by orchards if they fall on the ground. Research led to them creating an invention that lessened the burden of apples falling on the ground.

“It was great working with Chase and Sam and getting their input the entire year. It was friend-bonding time, but also learned a lot together on solutions and how each of us work. These are my really good friends now,” Everroad said.

Tekulve added, “One thing we learned is that being successful isn’t the only goal. Especially through engineering you are going to run into a lot of problems and it is just important to understand that when you fail, it's just part of the learning process.”

Hostetler and Stromberg focused on garbage collection and how some trash cans are being destroyed by the pickup claw on a garbage truck.

One engineering issue they had to overcome was the different types and sizes of standardized trash cans.

“We had to change the project dimensions to fit the new dimensions and so we had to go back and make changes,” Hostetler said.

Beyond engineering, both students learned invaluable skills such as an increased-understanding of problem-solving as well as communication.

“We would change something and forget to tell each other and that would throw off our whole design for that work. We both learned new skills and got very familiar with working with metal. That was something we had no experience in. Tristen got some good experience with welding and I got a lot of good experience with cutting and grinding,” Stromberg said.

Hostetler added, “By the end I actually learned how to weld.”

The 2025 Senior Engineering Class project was overseen by Industrial Tech teacher Michael Wilds.
